Working for Social Transformation TOGETHER

The Indian Subcontinent is amongst the World’s most disaster-prone areas. Among the 29 states and 7 union territories, 25 are disaster-prone. Natural Calamities have frequented India since time immemorial. In the recent past, few of the most devastating calamities have stuck various parts of the country, leaving a trail of unimaginable death, destruction and sufferings. Disaster-preparedness (both natural and man-made) is one of ActionAid’s long term initiatives. In the past, we have supported the relief work for Tamil Nadu Floods (2015), Cyclone Hudhud, Andhra Pradesh (2014), Kashmir Floods (2014), Phailine cyclone, Odisha (2013), Muzaffarnagar Riots (2013), Uttarakhand Floods (2012), Drought, Andhra Pradesh (2010), Drought, 11 states (2009) to name a few.

Our interventions are not just limited to distribution of emergency-supplies like water, food kits, medicines, shelter kits, health & hygiene kits; we also look into long-term intervention that will inculcate building leadership capacity of community women on disaster-preparedness, relief operation, livelihood and skill based training to ensure a sustained relief and rehabilitation, initiation of measures to reduce the occurrence of disasters wherever possible. By contributing to our Emergency fund, you not only ensure immediate relief as soon as the disaster strikes; but you also ensure long-term relief and rehabilitation post-disaster.

Our Intervention

As soon as disaster strikes, we ensure that the ActionAid team and our band of volunteers reach the site for evaluation and immediate relief. We reach out to the most vulnerable and excluded who are usually the last to receive relief. We ensure that single women, children, destitute, the aged, diseased are the first to receive relief and rehabilitation.

Vulnerability analysis is carried out in a participatory manner, with the affected community, where the community itself identifies the beneficiaries to receive relief.
Maintaining Standards: We ensure that all relief support supplied (food, clothes, housing) respects the local, environmental, religious, gender and cultural sensitivities of affected communities. We also ensure that all material supplied are of high quality. Additionally, we pay extra attention to privacy needs of women (particularly pregnant, lactating) and also ensure children’s specific needs addressed.
Psychosocial counseling is crucial in helping people overcome the trauma of loss, regain a sense of normality and start rebuilding their lives. We ensure Individual and group counselling for the affected communities, training of community cadres in counselling to expand our reach as well as referral support whenever required.
  • IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY RESPONSE

As a part of the first level of intervention, we distribute immediate relief support like Water, Food, Health and hygiene kits, medical camps, medicines and shelter support.

  • MID & LONG TERM RELIEF AND REHABILITATION EFFORTS

In addition to immediate relief, we also look into long-term intervention that will inculcate building leadership capacity of community women on disaster-preparedness, relief operation, livelihood and skill based training to ensure a sustained relief and rehabilitation, initiation of measures to reduce the occurrence of disasters wherever possible and other interventions that aim at sustained relief and rehabilitation.
